The Voice of Modern Slavery

Thursday 6th October 2011, 9.30 am – 5.30 pm

at The Design Academy and The Unity Theatre, 1, Hope Place.

The Liverpool John Moores University and Feelgood Theatre Productions are collaborating on an interdisciplinary conference that will explore the various literary, cultural and societal questions of modern day slavery and trafficking.

Hosted by Professor Frank McDonough (LJMU) and the award winning theatre and opera director, Caroline Clegg, this unique conference is open to all to debate the key issues and brings together international academics, teachers, theatre practitioners and NGO’s.

Core to the conference will be two sessions to explore how we bear ‘witness to slavery’ and the complex relationships that exist between eyewitness accounts, storytelling, academic knowledge, the media, public performances and how through such we can bring about societal awareness and change.

This will be followed by lunch and the matinee performance at the Unity Theatre of the award winning play Slave – A Question of Freedom adapted from Mende Nazer’s critically acclaimed autobiography Slave (Virago) and a closing discussion which will include the cast of the production. Through one individual story a universal voice can be heard giving voice to the voiceless.
