writing on the wall

Through words and song Alex Wheatle MBE charts the journey of his own personal uprising; from the brutality of children’s homes to selling a ‘weed’ on Brixton’s ‘frontline, through the 1981 riots, and consequently a brutal prison system, finally emerging as a respected and award winning author.

During the recent riots in London and across the UK Alex was in high demand as an informed commentator, he was commissioned to write features for the Evening Standard and The Guardian and was interviewed on Al Jazeera and across BBC radio and television. The parallels, 30 years on, between the Brixton riots of 1981 and those of this summer are startling; the tour of Uprising is remarkably prescient.

The play is followed by a Q&A and book signing
